Alef Multimedia has won the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) Award in the "Current Affairs" category for a documentary produced for Al Jazeera English's Witness program, titled Rescue Mission Gaza.
The award winners were announced during a ceremony held in London on Wednesday, February 28. The winning film highlights the challenges faced by medics and rescue workers in Gaza during the war, shedding light on the dangers they endure while saving the wounded, transporting casualties to hospitals, and rescuing children from the rubble.
The production team faced the same life-threatening risks as the medics in Gaza. The film's director, Mohamed Sawwaf, was seriously injured, and the ceremony organizers were unable to reach him to inform him of the win. Tragically, Marwan Al-Sawwaf, a member of the filmmaking team, was killed by an Israeli missile. In a recorded video from Rafah, cinematographer Ibrahim Al-Attal stated, "I hope the world knows that the people of Gaza love life and hate war."
Upon receiving the award, Fiona Lawson-Baker, the executive producer of Witness, said, "This award is a testament to the courage of our teams around the world, particularly the production team in Gaza, who worked under nearly impossible conditions."
Issa Ali, acting director of Al Jazeera English, added, "We are delighted to win this prestigious award, which is highly valued by journalists and experts in the television industry. It is recognition of the hard work and sacrifices made by our teams."
The Royal Television Society, founded in 1927, is one of the most respected media institutions in the United Kingdom. Each year, it honors outstanding media productions from Britain and around the world.
